Why Consult An Audiologist
Audiologists are highly trained professionals who
hold doctoral degrees in audiology from accredited
universities and are specialists in the prevention,
identification, assessment and non-medical treatment
of hearing and balance disorders in adults and children.
When concerned about hearing health, an Audiologist will
conduct a comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment using
specialized equipment to obtain accurate results about hearing
loss. Since hearing loss is only caused by medical problems
10% of the time, audiologists are educated to recognize all
conditions and reasons for hearing loss and balance problems
and when it is appropriate for a medical referral.
Audiologists will determine appropriate patient treatment by
combining a complete history with a variety of specialized
auditory and vestibular assessments. Then a comprehensive
hearing aid evaluation will be used to determine which
hearing aids are most appropriate for the patient. Some
90 to 95 percent of all cases of hearing loss can be
significantly improved with hearing aids.
Audiologists use the most advanced computerized procedures
and state-of-the-art equipment to individualize the fitting
of hearing aids to a particular type of hearing loss. In
addition to properly fitting hearing aids, an audiologist
can provide follow-up care, hearing aid accessories and
training for the patient and their family members.
The American Academy of Audiology guides its member
audiologists with a rigid code of ethics requiring the
highest standards of service and ethical business practices.
The Au.D. (Doctor of Audiology) is the designation of the professional doctorate in audiology.
